Trip to CERN
[Under auspices of ASFYON]
In search for the holy grail of physics
The most impressive research centre in the field of fundament physics is located at CERN [ European Organization for Nuclear Research ] near Geneve. Thousands of scientists from all over the world work together to achieve the most difficult challenge in finding the "holy grail" of theoretical physics.
Deep under the Jurra massif close to Geneva lies a 27 km long circular tunnel, where protons are accelerated to huge energies, i.e., 14 TeV, in order to smash on each other. The resulting collisions simulate a fraction of a second the situation just after the big bang. At this period of the evolution of our universe, very mysterious particles and topological object could exist. The law of physics would have a marvelous simple structure. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the research center CERN will detect eventually events out of the vacuum which could support a theory of everything (TOE). The detector ATLAS ( and the CMS) was build to do this job.

Twee maal per jaar wordt er een reis georganiseerd naar Cern ( april- oktober). Het hoogtepunt is dan een bezoek aan het laboratorium.
